As a general rule, the further forward your thumb holds the dart barrel (grip section), the shorter the shaft should be. Ultimately, you need to test which shaft length allows your darts the smoothest flight.
The material of the shaft – whether made of metal or plastic – is irrelevant. Metal and plastic have certain advantages and disadvantages.
